CHAPTER 18

“Cody, wake up!”

Cody blinked up at the dark shape looming over her. “Sorry, I…” She broke off as memories came flashing back. What the hell was the matter with her? How could she crash out in the middle of a firefight? She scraped her hand down her face, and the dark shape resolved into Taff. “What happened?”

“It’s okay, we’re safe for now,” Taff said. “Azden and me finished them off. We can rest here for a while to recover. Kappa will join us soon.” She glanced back toward the street before adding, “Hopefully.”

Cody swiped the cold sweat from her forehead and checked her status. She’d been wounded, and her stamina was still low, but it was slowly ticking upward.

“How are you doing?” Taff asked. “Are you hurt?”

Cody hesitated. “I got a cut on my leg. Nothing serious.”

Taff nodded toward the dead bandit lying on the ground. “You did good. You saved my ass.”

Cody stared at the bandit’s body, remembering the way he’d fought on despite the poison coursing through his system, then she looked over to where Azden was leaning against a wall. “I was certain they’d got you. The flames…it was awful.”

“It sure wasn’t pretty,” Azden admitted. “But this team has what you might call a secret weapon.”

“He means me—my special skill, anyway,” Taff said. “It’s called triage. I can revive pretty much anyone if I can get to them quick enough, so long as I’m not interrupted.”

“Wow!” Cody breathed. “That’s a good skill to have.”

“It’s come in handy once or twice,” Azden put in. “That’s why I like to keep her around.”

Taff snorted. “I’ve saved your sorry ass more times than I can count.”

“All right, don’t go sentimental on me,” Azden said. “Anyway, we’re losing sight of the important thing.” He gestured toward Cody. “Our newbie came through.”

Taff nodded. “That she did. Passed with flying colors.” She thrust out her hand, and when Cody took it, she pulled her up to her feet. “Welcome to the team, Cody. You’ve earned your place.”

Cody smiled. “Thanks. It’s good to be here.”

“We’ll see about that,” Azden said, but his dark words couldn’t alter Cody’s mood. She’d made it. She was on the team. Perhaps now, she might stand a chance of breaking out of Fortress Forty-seven. She ran her hand through her tangled hair and realized that her bracelet was flashing. She tapped it, and a stream of messages scrolled upward in the air:

“You went up two levels just for killing a few bandits,” Taff said, staring at something just above Cody’s head. “Sometimes I miss being a newbie.
